Alger Hiss Trial

Rosenberg Case

when the Soviets tested their first atomic bomb, many Americans were convinced spies helped them steal the technology from the U.S. An FBI investigation traced a spy ring to a couple in the US. They were found guilty of treason and executed for the crime in 1953. Civil rights groups raised questions about whether anticommunist hysteria had played a role in the conviction and punishment of the couple.

used the growing concern over communism in his reelection campaign. He charged that 205 Communists were still working for the State Department. He used a steady stream of unsupported accusations about Communists in gov’t to keep the media focus on himself and to discredit the Truman administration.
