Theories of Emotion
James Lange Theory
argues that a stimulus causes physiological arousal first, then causes an emotion.
Cannon-Bard Theory
argues that a stimulus causes us to experience a physiological arousal and emotion at the same time, but gives no attention to the role of thoughts or outward behavior/cognitive appraisal
Shacter’s Two Factor Theory
argues that a stimulus causes physiological arousal first. you then identify a reason for this arousal by using a cognitive label. then, you experience the emotion.
Lazarus Theory
argues that our emotional experience is dependent upon our interpretation of the stimulus we face. our thoughts and labeling of events determine our emotional responses.
Common Sense Theory
argues that a stimulus triggers an emotion which triggers a physiological response.
Zajonc-LeDoux Theory
Argues some emotions are automatic and a stimulus causes a direct emotional reaction. we can have emotional reactions apart from, or even before, out conscious interpretation of a situation.
