Cult of Honor
Who- white males (in the south)
What- a code of behavior that southern white men followed in which anytime their dignity, social status, or manhood was threatened they would duel or publicly reprimand someone

Why- they had placed a large emphasis on courtesy, chivalry, and respect along with their aristocratic ideals
Paternalism
Who- small farmers and sometimes great planters
What- a traditional, male dominated family structure in which the women and children contributed by following the Men of the home and worked to support the household's economy
Where- US (particularly the South)
When- mid 11800s (around 1840s)
Why- they believed that a structured system would create order and stability in household-centered economies
Gang System
Who- planters with larger plantations
What- a system of assigning slave labor in which slaves were placed into groups with a designated driver (trusted slaves) and had to work for as many hours as the overseer felt

Why- the planters with larger plantations needed a way to effectively assign labor
Slave Codes
Who- affected slaves
What- laws that prevented slaves from slaves from various rights such as holding property, congregating with other slaves, carrying firearms, leaving properties without permission
Where- Southern US When- mid-1800s
Why- they defined a person's race and thoroughly established the institution of slavery
Task System
Who- owners of larger plantations
What- a system of slave labor in which the slaves were given a specific task in the morning and once they were finished they were free for the rest of the day
Where- Southern US

Why- it was mostly used in rice plantations
Denmark Vesey
Who- a free Black person from Charleston who planned on leading a revolt
What- he and his followers prepared for a revolt but it did not go through because the plans were leaked - they were suppressed and retribution after the plans were leaked.

When- 1822
Why- actual revolts rarely occurred but the plans of doing so put fear in the white southerners
Gabriel Prosser
Who- a black slave
What- he along with 1000 other slaves planed an uprising but two Africans exposed to plan and a Virginia militia quickly came to suppress the uprising - 36 lives were lost including his
Where- Richmond VA

Why- it was during the time where slaves were actively resisting- it was usually in forms such as running away, but some slaves violently expressed their unhappiness
Nat Turner
Who- a slave preacher
What- led a group of armed slaves who went from house to house killing about 60 white people - they were eventually overpowered by troops and over 100 slaves were killed
Where- Southampton County, Virginia When- 1831
Why- it was the only large scale slave revolt/uprising
Pidgin
Who- african americans/slaves
What- a simple, common language that included some african words but mostly english words
Where- US
When- 1800s
Why- because the first generations of slaves had trouble communicating, it was made to overcome the barriers -- it became more complex and detailed as black people gained more education and spent more time in the US
Slave Music
Who- african americans & slaves
What- music made by african americans -- some of which were also used/sang during religious services - at times they would sing it in front of other white people

Why- it was important to slaves because they used it to pass time while working and it was an method in which they could express their emotions
