aim
To evaluate the effects of regeneration on the locality
hypothesis
The regeneration of Portsmouth has had a positive impact on the locality
location
Portsmouth is a port city and naval base on England's south coast in the county of Hampshire. Fratton is a residential and formerly industrial area of Portsmouth. It consists of mostly Victorian terraced houses. Gunwharf Quays is a designer shopping outlet that is located along the west coast of Portsmouth which overlooks the Solent and Gosport.
why is the location suitable?
it is easily accessible as it is 55.4 miles away from the school so we can repeat the study if needed. St Mary's hospital is near by if medical care is needed. there are no accessibility limits as they are all public places so are safe to visit.
social impacts of regeneration (3)
Lots of facilities were created for the people of Portsmouth
2,300 jobs created by the Gunwharf development, including 1,000 jobs in related areas outside of the Gunwharf Quays
40% of jobs within the bars, restaurants and retail outlets are part-time, which are often taken by students from the University of Portsmouth
economic impacts of regeneration (3)
Shopping areas in Fratton and the main high street became run down
Portsmouth City Council transferred money away from other important public services to support the £8.4 million public cost of the Tower
The infrastructure around Portsmouth has been improved
environmental impacts of regeneration (3)
Gunwharf Quay has over the last two years increased its combined recycling and reuse performance from 48% to 75%
In 2015 Gunwharf Quays won the National Recycling Awards 'National Retail Recycler of the Year' title and an 'International Green Apple' award for our Waste Management Programme
Increased pollution into the city with added population
how has Gunwharf Quays changed?
It was used as a storage area for weapons for the navy and army but this was disbanded and it fell into disuse. The Ministry of Defense sold the land to the Portsmouth City Council who regenerated the area to increase the number of visitors and therefore investment
does housing costing more in Gunwharf Quays prove or disprove our hypothesis and why?
its proves the hypothesis as the regeneration of the area means the houses are in a nicer location and higher demand due to the rising population but could also disprove it as housing prices rising could have a negative impact on the people already living in the area
one example of secondary data we used and why
The housing prices were collected as secondary data from Zoopla for two areas, allowing us to investigate the differences between them and measure the impacts of regeneration on the city.
two ways we managed the risks
we waked in single file and faced oncoming traffic to reduce the risk of road traffic accidents and worked in groups of at least 3 in case of accidents
did we use systematic, random, stratified or opportunity sampling?
systematic
two primary data collection methods used
bipolar survey and environmental quality survey
benefit and limitation of bipolar survey
benefit - it gives a general idea of the opinion of the population living in the area and has a numerical scale so the data can be compared between sites
limitation - it may be biased as the person may give the answers they think we want
benefit and limitation of the environmental quality survey
benefit - it allows a wide range of areas to be covered and easily assessed so the data is more reliable and consistent and anomalies can be clearly identified
limitation - the data will be affected by the personal bias of the individual completing the survey, making the data unreliable as it is difficult to remain consistent and unbiased to the desired results
how were the bipolar survey results presented and why
as compound graphs so we can easily compare the results
briefly describe the bipolar survey for Fratton
In Fratton the points we were assessing gave us a mean score of -0.012, with a total score of -1. This tells us that the environmental quality of Fratton is generally poor. the data from Fratton was much lower than Gunwharf Quays.
briefly describe the bipolar survey for Gunwharf Quays
In Gunwharf Quays the points we were assessing gave us a mean score of 0.099, with a total score of 8. This tells us that the environmental quality of Gunwharf Quays was better due to the regeneration that has occurred in this area.
how was the environmental quality survey presented and why
as a scatter graph so we could compare two sets of data (EQS score and distance from Fratton) to see if there is a positive correlation, as well as being able to use a line of best fit to identify any anomalies in our data and assess the reliability of the results
briefly describe the EQS scatter graph
As the distance from Fratton increased, the EQS total score out of 28 generally increased. In Fratton the score was very low at -16 as it is not an area of regeneration. The total scores increased to 12 as we reached Gunwharf Quays, as it is an area of regeneration. The total scores rapidly increased as we moved from 800m to 1000m suggesting the quality of the area became much better. There are two anomalies in the data at 200m and 1600m from Fratton, as we would expect the area 200m away to have a lower EQS score and the area 1600m away to have a higher EQS score.
what other way could we have presented the data but why would this not be as effective
as a table but this does not allow us to easily identify anomalies and does not clearly show a trend within the data
what was the Rs Value for the spearman's rank and what does this mean
0.87 meaning there is a 99% chance the hypothesis is correct as it is greater than the critical value of 0.795
benefits of spearman's rank (3)
We have enough data pairs to test (minimum for Spearman's Rank is 10)
Gives us a clear numerical value to show the strength and nature of the relationship
shows correlation between 2 sets of data, and our hypothesis is to test a relationship between 2 sets (distance from Fratton and environmental quality)
drawbacks of spearman's rank (4)
It doesn't explain the cause of the relationship
It would work better if we had more data
It can be difficult to work out
It requires 2 sets of variable data
2 limitations to our study
We collected data at only 10 sites along the transect. This meant that we had only the minimum data required for Spearmans Rank and that our data could have been easily affected by anomalies.
We collected data only on one day. This meant the data may be biased due to the weather and time of day during the visit.
2 ways these limitations could be overcome
We could have collected data from more sites in the area or used secondary data for some areas that may not be accessible or easy to get to in 1 day.
We could visit the sites a number of times throughout the year to collect data and take average readings to get a more reliable result
1 other source of data that could have been used
questionnaires filled out by a number of people in the area to gain a general idea of how the people living in the areas perceive the effects of regeneration
conclusions
The regeneration of Portsmouth has had a positive impact on the locality, as suggested by our hypothesis. We can see this from our spearman's rank value which was higher than the critical value of 0.74 meaning we can be sure that our hypothesis was correct as the data had a 99% chance of being correct. We can also see from our EQS and Bipolar survey graphs as there is a very strong correlation between the distance from Fratton (an area which has not been regenerated) to Gunwharf Quays (an area of regeneration) and the environmental quality of the area. From these conclusions we can see that our hypothesis is correct as the regeneration of the area has allowed for environmental, social and economic opportunities, such as a new shopping centre which not only creates economic opportunities due to increased employment and more money being spent in the local area, but also social opportunities as the centre aslo contains cinemas and bowling alleys. The regeneration had a positive impact on the environment as the condition of the buildings was much better in Gunwharf Quays due to increased investment and there were more green spaces available to the people living in the area.
