Section I, Part B--Listening Comprehension

This part of the test is conformed by up to three selections, which will be a combination of

  • Long narratives,

  • Interviews,

  • Short lectures,

  • Instructions,

  • or some type of speech sample,

These selections can be between two to five minutes long

  • You can take notes but this will not be scored.

  • Practice before the exam to determine whether you do better if you take notes or if you recall from memory.

  • Avoid writing whole sentences.

  • Practice using keywords to recall ideas presented in the sample.

STRATEGIES FOR LISTENING

You will hear the audio twice, the first time look for the topic and general ideas, the second focus on specific details like unfamiliar words or words you consider key.

  • Read the introductions and questions.

  • Follow the thread of the conversation.

  • Write down words that lead you to ideas.

  • Focus on what you can understand.

  • Use the context to understand unfamiliar vocabulary.
