HOW DID THE NAZIS CONTROL USING TERROR?

• Newspapers- make everywhere else terrible – created terror as it made it seem like if you left Germany your life would be filled with constant pain

• German papers censored the Night of the Long Knives

• ‘Speak through a flower’ - say only good things or you will not speak at all – made it so people who scared of speaking out completely, only praises for the government were allowed to be said

• ‘re-education’ - taking people in who did not speak well about Germany – created terror as people did not want to face the same fate as those who went through this process

• Political parties banned – no one to speak out against the government, it was all legal

• Radio speeches – Hitler making threats – everyone could hear it all the time, you had no escape from the possibility of being a victim of the regime

• March 1933- concentration camps appeared – sent here for any act of political opposition

• Gestapo – working with the Germans

• Do nothing forbidden, or say your opinions

• Germans turning in those they know as a form to keep themselves safe

• Trade unions banned

• German Jews victimized

• Losing jobs unless they take the Nazi lines

• Can’t criticize government works – treason – not allowed to present position or you will be beaten

• Nazi indoctrination of fear of communism

• ‘regain our place among the strong nations of the world’

These methods make evidence of opposition difficult to identify as the groups would have to be quiet in their opposition in order to keep the movement alive, as well as protect the members of their group from the Regime. Furthermore, as the praises for Hitler were everywhere; it was hard to document any negative press as it would have led to punishment.

It is highly arguable that terror effectively reduced opposition to the Nazis, as without their effective use of terror, the opposition groups would be able to fight against the regime far more effectively. Many members of the Social Democrats, Communists, and Churches were afraid of being taken into the concentration camps and punished for their words against the Regime.
