How mountains are formed

Fold mountains:

  • They are formed by tectonic plates pushing up against each other. Layers of rock buckle and are pushed upward.

  • Most common type of mountain formation

  • An example is the Himalayas

Block mountains:

  • They are formed by cracks in the earth’s crust, known as faults. Rocks that are cooler because they are closer to the earth’s surface tend to crack and break apart. Rather than folding, they are lifted up in giant blocks.

  • An example is the arctic region of Norway

Volcanic mountains:

  • They are formed by volcanoes when magma pushes its way from beneath the earth to the crust. The material that comes out of a volcano builds up the earth's surface. Each eruption brings new material to the surface.
