MODULE 7: WATER PUMPS

  • Water pump :: mechanical device or plumbing equipment that utilizes energy to move, transfer, convey, lift, circulate or pressurize water in a system of pipes, devices or vessels

  • Centrifugal pump :: (type of dynamic pressure pump) This type of pump contains an impeller mounted on a rotating shaft

  • Axial flow :: (type of dynamic pressure pump) also called propeller pump; consists of a propeller in a pipe; flow of liquid is at right angle from suction to discharge

  • Turbine pump :: (type of dynamic pressure pump) vertical turbine located below groundwater levels and a driving motor located higher up, usually over the well casing at grade level

  • Jet pump :: (type of dynamic pressure pump) also called ejector pump; venturi tube is added to the centrifugal pump

  • Submersible pump :: (type of dynamic pressure pump) motor can be submerged along with the turbine without damage to itself and the internal components

  • Reciprocating pump :: (type of positive displacement pump) having a plunger that moves back and forth within a cylinder equipped with check valves

  • Piston pump :: (type of positive displacement pump) pump with the piston inside the cylinder with high pressure seal acting in a reciprocating motion that causes liquid or fluid to move or to compress air

  • Diaphragm pump :: (type of positive displacement pump) also called membrane pump; utilizes a combination of the reciprocating motion of thermoplastic, rubber or Teflon diaphragm and valves

  • Rotary pump :: (type of positive displacement pump) a helical or spiral rotor- a turning vertical shaft within a rubber sleeve
