INTRODUCTION TO URBAN HOUSING ATTRIBUTES & TYPOLOGY

Urban Area - the region surrounding a city. Most inhabitants of urban areas have nonagricultural jobs. Can refer to towns, cities, and suburbs.

Urbanization - A global phenomenon that has been a key contributor to progressive development.

Urbanization challenges on:

  1. Infrastructure

  2. Health

  3. Environmental and social problems including traffic congestion

  4. Informal settlements

  5. Disaster vulnerability

  6. Threats to water and food security

Rural Area - areas are the opposite of urban areas. Rural areas, often called "the country," have low population density and large amounts of undeveloped land.

Typology - creating an archive of certain types related to architecture styles reduced to their elementary geometrical nature or the search effort of the combination possibilities of the architectural elements to classify the types which are the architectural forms.

Housing Typology - the different physical characteristics of a building according to the materials that were available in a particular place, climate, cultural aspects, social status, political view, economy, etc.

Housing (RA 1120) - refers to a multi-dimensional concept relating to the process of residing and the objects of dwelling whose main attributes are location relative to access livelihood, tenure arrangements, cost, and physical structure, as well as their environment.

Human Settlements (RA 1120) - comprise of (a) physical components of shelter and infrastructure; and (b) services to which the physical elements provide support, such as community services which include education, health, culture, welfare, recreation, and nutrition

Urban Housing - apart from being a shelter, is seen as a means of access to employment and livelihood, urban and community services, and proximity to desirable neighbors.

Different housing types:

  1. Single Detached

  2. Single Attached / Duplex

  3. Terraced House / Townhouse / Rowhouse

  4. Bungalow

  5. Apartment / Condominium

  6. Other single-detached houses

  7. Movable dwellings

Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) - The Central Housing Authority of the Philippines. A primary government agency responsible for the management of housing human settlement and urban development. It was implemented on February 14, 2019. It is founded by Secretary Jose Rizalino “Jerry” L. Acuzar.
