Digital natives

Invindividuals who were born and raised in a world of gadgets, computers, and internet.

Online communication

is a form of communication, using the various channels available on the Internet to communicate and interact online to relay a message to a targeted audience.

Instant messaging

application allows one to communicate with another person over a network in real time, in relative privacy.

Electronic mail (e-mail)

A computer-based system for exchanging messages through mail servers.

is a store-and-forward system: A message delivery system in which messages are forwarded between servers and then stored on those servers until they are picked up.

Text chat

Online chat technologies allow users to join chat rooms and communicate with many people at once, publicly.

Forum

a web-based discussion and advice- sharing site; more feature-rich type of newsgroup

These allow users to post a “topic” for others to review.

Most forums are public, allowing anybody to sign up at any time. A few are private, gated communities where new members must pay a small fee to join

short for web logs, are like online journals for a particular person

A web page containing personal experiences and opinions, with posts listed most-recent-first

A web server that hosts the blogs of individuals, either free or for a small fee. Examples: WordPress, Typepad, and Blogge

Microblog

A service that allows the posting of short messages. A status update service such as Twitter, limited to a very few characters per post.

example of microblogging platform used to post frequent updates and to comment on events as they happen

Wiki

an online database of information that is collaboratively edited by the public

Newsgroup

An online discussion group; predates the web, forerunners of web-based forums that are popular today

Usenet

A global distributed discussion system of servers hosting public newsgroups

Newsreader

An application used by people to read Usenet articles, or an email client that supports newsgroups; organizes incoming messages from newsgroups and allows users to read and respond to them

NNTP (network news transport protocol)

transports news articles between news servers and clients reading and posting articles

Social network services

These allow people to come together online around shared interests, hobbies or causes.

Internet-based system

a system enabling users to interact in real-time and by using messaging programs

Umbrella

term for sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+

tags, or hashtags (#)
