Farming in such a way to protect the environment, aid and expand natural resources and to make the best use of nonrenewable resources.

New cards
2

What are the steps of the scientific method?

  1. define the problem, 2. gather background information, 3. form a hypothesis, 4. make observations, 5. test the hypothesis , and 6. draw conclusions.

New cards
3

What are some ag issues that are relevant in California?

California drought, regulatory environment, labor costs and shortages, export dependency, etc.

New cards
4

What are some issues relating to sustainability and population growth in relation to agriculture/food?

Rise in food demand which puts pressure on land, water, and energy.

New cards
5

Describe the social and economic impacts of California agriculture on the state, nation and globe.

Contribute to the state’s image throughout the world and add to the quality of life of its residents.

New cards
6

What are some types of agricultural technology (machinery) that have enhanced ag production?

Automated irrigation systems, temperature and moisture sensors, and Gps technology.

New cards
7

What are some ways we can improve sustainability of food supplies whole taking care of our environment?

Incorporate more plant-based options into your menu.

New cards
8

What is nitrogen fixation?

A biological process in which the nitrogen gas is converted into a usable form for plants and other microbes.

New cards
9

What is photosynthesis? Describe the steps and how it assists with plant growth and agriculture.

It splits carbon dioxide into carbon and oxygen, adds water and forms carbohydrates (starches and sugars).

New cards
10

What are the steps to cell division (including mitosis)?

Interphase, prophase, metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase, and cytokinesis.

New cards
11

Interphase

Where a cell spends most of its time, it grows, replicates its chromosomes, and prepared for cell division.

New cards
12

Prophase

The chromosomes condense and centrosomes move to opposite sides of the nucleus, initiating formation of the mitotic spindle.

New cards
13

Metaphase

The nucleus dissolves and the cell’s chromosomes condense and move together, aligning in center of the dividing cell.

New cards
14

Anaphase

The sister chromatids separate from each other and are pulled towards opposite ends of the cell.

New cards
15

Telophase

The cell is nearly done dividing, and it starts to re-establish its normal structures as cytokinesis takes place.

New cards
16

Cytokinesis

Splits the parents cell into two identical daughter cells.

New cards
17

How does reproduction work in animals?

During Meiosis males produce sperm in the testes and females produce egg cells in the ovaries.

New cards
18

Describe meiosis and how the process works.

A process where a single cell divides twice to produce four cells containing half the original amount of genetic information.

New cards
19

What are 5 major diseases related to nutritional deficiencies in livestock?

Bloat, grass tetany, anemia, laminitis, ketosis, and more.

New cards
20

How does reproduction work in a plant?

The anther is the part of the stamen that contains pollen. Pollen contains the male gametes. Pollen must be moved to a part of the pistil called the stigma for reproduction to take place.

New cards
52

Female plant anatomy

The pistil which is made up of the stigma, style, ovary, and ovule.

New cards
53

Male plant anatomy

Stamens which is the anther and the filament.
