Economically - Natural resources like (Rubber, Oil, and Tin)
Politically - Competitive nation-states and growing nationalism after 1870, led to a scramble for colonies to acquire ports and coaling stations for navies.
Socially- Social Darwinism and racism, with the belief that superior races must dominate the inferior races by force.
Religiously - Belief that Europeans had a moral responsibility to civilize and convert non-whites to Christianity.
How were they different from the Age of Discovery?
This was different from the Age of Discovery, where the primary motive was to find new trade routes and acquire valuable goods from distant lands.
Who was Cecil Rhodes?
British Businessman, Mining Magnate, and Politician who played a major role in the expansion of the British Empire in Africa. He founded Diamond and Gold Companies which would become monopolies. Gained control of a territory north of Transvaal named “Rhodesia”
