Nationalism

The belief that people’s greatest loyalty should not be to a king or an empire but to a nation of people who share a common culture.

Crimean War

War between the Russians and Ottomans. The Ottomans won thanks to the help of France and Britain. Almost upset the balance of power in Europe. Shows the balance would be hard to keep.

Russification

Forcing people to give into Russian culture

Mazzini

"The Soul" Of the Italian Unification. Formed the “Young Italy”.  He called for the end of foreign rule [In Italy] and the unification of Italy.  Italy should be its own nation.

Cavour

"The Brain" Of the Italian Unification. Prime Minister of Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia.  Used diplomacy and alliances to increase Piedmont-Sardinia's power. Will unify the North.

Garibaldi

"The Sword" Of the Italian Unification. Leader of the Red Shirts.  Will Unify the South and merge with the North.

The country before Germany

King of Prussia, made the Prime Minister.

Otto von Bismarck

Prime Minister of Prussia. Also known as the "Iron Chancellor" for his powerful rule. Expanded the military. And was known for "Blood and Iron" as well as Realpolitik.

Politics then leaves no room for idealism.

Blood and Iron

Bismarck’s idea that to accomplish their goals they have to use war.

The 7 week war

War between Austria and Prussia over a border disagreement. Ended with Prussia winning, and gaining lots of Austrian land. Beginning to unify Germans.

The Franco-Prussian war

War between France and Prussia over a fake telegraph from Prussia insulting the French. Was fought so that Prussia could take over india and German states, and they also took some land from France after they won.

Alsace Lorraine

The area of France that Prussia took after the Franco-Prussian War.

Germans

People who spoke German.

The Ottomans

An islamic empire, in the mIddle East, and Eastern Europe.
