Dress code in the lab

  1. Wear a lab coat at all time.

  2. Wear clothing which covers and protects your entire body.

  3. No jewelry is allowed.

  4. Wear shoes which cover and protect your feet completely.

  5. Tie back long hair.

  6. All people in all laboratories must wear eye protection (safety glasses, chemical goggles or face shields) whenever there is a potential for hazardous substances coming in contact with the eyes.

  7. Everyone in all laboratories must wear gloves.

General safety rules

  1. No food or drink is allowed in the lab.

  2. No one may work in the lab in the absence of an instructor.

  3. Responsible behavior is essential. Careless students may be asked to leave the lab.

  4. Be well prepared before you come to lab. An understanding of experimental procedures will minimize careless mistakes.

  5. Keep your workstation neat and clean.

  6. Keep your hands away from your face while working.

  7. Wash your hands as often as possible, especially before leaving the lab.

  8. Know what to do in case of emergency.

  9. Never pipet by mouth.

  10. Use extreme care when handling any chemical and biohazard materials.

  11. Do not place flammable substances near heat.

  12. Report all injuries and accidents to your instructor.

  13. Note the location of safety devices.

  14. At the end, all waste should be disposed of in an approved manner.

  15. Unauthorized people are not allowed in the lab and children are not allowed access.

What to do in case of accident ?

Broken glass

Do not pick up broken glass with your fingers! Get a broom and  dust pan. Sweep the broken glass into the dust pan and dispose of it.

Small chemical spill

Wipe up liquid spills with paper towels and dispose of them as your instructor suggests.​After the chemical spill has been wiped up, rinse the area with  water to make sure that all residual chemicals have been removed.

Large chemical spill

Move away from the area of the spill. Warn the people around you loudly. Call your instructor! Let the instructor handle the clean-up!

Chemical splash in your face, goggles on

Don’t take your goggles off! Yell for help. Go to the eye wash station and rinse your face quickly with the goggle still on. Then remove the goggles and rinse your face again.

If this sort of accident happens, you may not be able to see well enough to go to the eye wash station on your own. Yell loudly for help and cooperate with anyone who comes to your aid.

Move away from the area where the spill occurred. Call loudly for help and warn others to stay away from the spill! Remove any contaminated clothing. Treat for 15 minutes under cold running water.

If you have a small fire in a container, find something you can use a lid for the container. When the container is covered, the fire will quickly burn itself out. Call the instructor for help.

Shout for help and leave the area immediately! The fire alarm will probably sound. When it does, evacuate the building and tell everyone you can, where the fire is.

Don’t run! It will only fan the flames and make the fire worse! Instead, you should stop moving, drop to the ground, and roll on the ground to extinguish the flames!
