run-off
any processes of lateral flow into the sea/river. the three types are overland flow, throughflow and groundwater flow
overland flow
rainfall runs off ground surface.
either because soil is saturated or intensity of rainfall exceeds infiltration capacity
infiltration capacity
the speed at which water infiltrates into the soil
throughflow
the lateral movement of water through soils
groundwater flow
the lateral movement of water within aquifers
condensation
the conversion of vapour/gas into a liquid
dew point
the temperature at which water vapour in the air turns into liquid water
what are clouds
clouds are visible aggregates of water or ice (or both) that float in the free air. They form when water vapour is cooled to dew point.
weathering
breakdown of rocks in situ by chemical, physical and biological processes
combustion
occurs when organic matter reacts or burns in the presence of oxygen
what are aquifers
aquifers are permeable or porous water-bearing rocks e.g. chalk, which are great reservoirs of water.
what is the water table
describes the upper level of groundwater. Its height fluctuates depending on water abstraction by people (loss) and water recharge (gain). its height fluctuates seasonally.
