How was the PT-109 used during JFK’s campaign for presidency?

The PT-109 story takes place in World War II. Kennedy and his crew were in the boat and Kennedy was supposed to be on lookout. Kennedy was actually sleeping and his entire crew was sleeping instead of looking out for the Japanese.
