Respiratory system (book)

Oxygen - is an essential element to humans and animals alike.

Respiratory system - is a set of organs responsible for absorbing oxygen into the body and for discarding carbon dioxide.

Respiration - the transportation of oxygen from the surrounding air to every cell and tissue of the human body.

Nasal Cavity - a tunnel that leads air to the inner parts of the respiratory tract.

Pharynx - located at the edge of your throat from where two tubes begin to diverge.

Epiglottis - thin cartilage that covers air passage, prevents food from entering the lungs.

Larynx - part of the respiratory that contains the vocal cords.

Trachea or windpipe - a tube where the air travels as it moves into the lungs.filters the air further before allowing it to enter the next passages.

Two branches - the trachea is divided into . branches.

Bronchi - these branches are made of cartilage that diverges into the left and right lungs.

Bronchus - singular form for bronchi.

Cilia - bronchial tubes and or nose have a mucous lining and tiny hairs, which also filter the air to remove the tiniest dust particles.

Bronchioles - are smaller branches of cartilage inside the lungs.

Lungs

lungs - biggest parts of the respiratory system. These are a pair of spongy bags in which oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other gases interchange, the lungs enable the process of breathing, talking, singing or laughing by absorbing the oxygen necessary for such actions.

Lobes - the lungs are divided into sections, which hold the tiny tubes within the lungs. the right lung consists of three . , while the left lung consists of two.

Pleura - thin membrane, envelopes the lobes, separating them from the chest wall.

Alveoli - Inside the lobes are small spongy sacs called .

Alveolus - singular form for Alveoli.

300 to 500M - numbers of alveoli in the human lungs.

Rib cage - protects the lungs and the nearby internal organs within the chest cavity.

Diaphragm - where the lungs sit. it is a curved muscle that contracts and enlarges during the process of breathing.

The Breathing process

Breathing - is often the easiest thing to do if your respiratory system is functioning normally.

Inhalation and exhalation - breathing two main process.

Inhalation - the inner parts of your respiratory system, specifically the alveoli and the lungs, contract and expand.

Exhalation - when you breathe out, the lungs and the alveoli deflate. the chest cavity, rib cage, and diaphragm relax and move back to their original positions.
