Anatomy & Physiology Unit II

Anatomy deals with the structure of the body while Physiology deals with the function of the body.

Vocabulary/Terminology

Homeostasis — the state of balance in your body

Positive Feedback — can disrupt homeostasis, deviation from the normal causing additional deviation

Negative Feedback — maintains homeostasis, deviation from the normal are brought back to normal

Supine — facing upwards

Prone — facing downwards

Superior — above another structure

Inferior — below another structure

Cephalic — closer to the head

Caudal — toward the tail (lower)

Anterior — front of the body

Posterior — back of the body

Proximal — closer to the point of attachment

Distal — farther from the point of attachment

Ventral — closer to the body

Dorsal — toward the back

Lateral — farther from the midline of the body

Medial — closer to the midline of the body

Anatomical Planes

Coronal (Frontal) Plane — divides the body into front and back sections

Sagittal Plane — divide the body into left and right sections

Median (Midsagittal) — divides the body into equal left and right parts

Axial (Horizontal / Transverse) Plane — divides the body into upper and lower segments

Feedback Loop + Example

Set Point — Regular Temperature (72° F)

Stimulus — Increase/Decrease In Temperature

Receptor — Thermometer

Control Center — Thermostat

Effector — AC/Heater
