  • Victory of Vicksburg

    • Confederacy split into 2 (1863, July 4)


  • Victory at Gettysburg (PA)

    • 4 July 1863

    • Bloodiest battle on American soil, Lincoln gave the Gettysburg address after.


  • The 13th Amendment (~1865)

    • Essentially abolished slavery

    • Problem: The Southern states are not want to come back

      • However. If the Union wins the war, will the Southern states have a choice?

    • NOT AN EASY 1-2 PUNCH !!

    • Already an opposed bill by the time the war was ending

    • Lincoln was a popular president and was inaugurated for a second term


  • Lincoln’s wish

    • A peaceful nation, both sides together again

    • No punishment towards southern states (?)

      • Welcome them back, because these states are our states, the UNITED STATES


  • Gettysburg Address (1863) BEFORE 13TH AMENDMENT

    • Delivered by President Lincoln

      • On the Battlefield

    • Prime Message

      • That we can endure and come back as a Union, No matter what happens, we will always be one nation.

    • Lincoln will do anything that he needs from a political standpoint and not a moral one.

      • You cant identify a “side” that he’s on because he wants to hold as much political power as he can.

      • He’s always trying to stay neutral, and to apply to both sides, EVEN if in the middle of a war.


  • War is over (April 9th, 1869)

    • Lincoln doesn't live a week after the war ends

      • Killed by John Wilkes Booth

      • Significance: Shows that SECTIONALISM IS NOT DEAD.

    • What about the 13th Amendment?

      • Lincoln was confident that the bill would be ratified, but the confederate peace delegation refused to pass it.

    • Siege at Petersburg (25 March 1865)

      • The Union wins the war

    • Robert E. Lee (Confederate) surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appottomax Court House (9 April 1865)

    • IN ALL, THE UNION WON THE WAR
