How did geography affect Phoneicia’s development?

Lebanon was very dense with trees and mountains, leaving virtually no flat land to farm on, so they had to rely on the sea for food, transportation etc.


They had very few natural resources so they had to take to the sea.

IMPORTED:

-copper

-iron

-ivory

used these materials to make gold jewlery, and silver and bronze bowls.


EXPORTED:

-Pine and cedar logs

-olive oil

-sea salt

-fish


NAVIGATION

They used the North star to navigate and calculate their position because it seemed still.

They built large trading ships to help them sail easier.


COLONIES

Colonies allowed them to get supplies and trade with other people.

Some of these colonies became strong city states.

Carthage was a colony located in North Africa that became so strong it established its own colonies and fought wars.


LEGACY

Phonecians influeced the Greeks and the Romans through cultral diffusion.

Through trade, they were able to connect the Mediteranean and places beyond.

They developed an alphabet of 22 letters.

  • By 750 BC the Greeks adapted and added to this alphabet

  • By 100 BC the Romans adapted the Greek version
