6.2 Indirect Object Pronouns

A direct object answers the question who? or what?

Direct object pronouns:

Me

Te

Lo, La

Nos

Los, Las

Juan ama a Dios. - Dios is the direct object

Nosotros iscribimos cartas. - Cartas is the direct object

An indirect object is a noun or pronoun that answers the question ¨who¨ or ¨for who¨

¿A quién le presta Roberto cien pesos?

To who does Roberto lend 100 pesos?

¡Atención! The forms of indirect object pronouns the first and second persons (me, te, nos, os) are the same as the direct object pronouns. Indirect object pronouns agree in number with the corresponding nouns, but not in gender.

Me - to for me

te - to for you

le - to him or for her

nos - to or for us

le - to or for yall or them

Juan compra un taco para sus amigos.

The subject would be Juan, verb compra, DO taco, IO is amigos

Placement for I.O Pronoun

  1. Before a conjugated verb

  2. Attached to infinitive

  3. Attach to present participle

Spanish speakers commonly use both an indirect object pronoun and the noun to which it refers in the same sentence. This is done to emphasize and clarify to whom the pronoun refers.

Indirect object pronouns are also used without the indirect object noun when the person for whom the action is being done is known.

Indirect object pronouns are usually placed before the conjugated form of the verb. In negative sentences, the pronoun is placed between no and the conjugated verb.

Martin me compra un regalo - Martin is buying me a gift

Eva no me describe cartas - Eva doesn’t write me letters

Because the indirect object pronouns le and less have multiple meanings, Spanish speakers often clarify to whom the pronouns refer with the preposition a + pronouns or a + noun

Me - A mí

Te - A tí

Le - A él, A ella, A used

Nos - A nosotros

Les - A ellos, A ustedes

The irregular verbs dar (to give) and decir (to say; to tell) are often used with indirect object pronouns

The forms of "dar" are:

  • Yo doy

  • Tú das

  • Él/Ella/Usted da

  • Nosotros/Nosotras damos

  • Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes dan

Here are all the forms of "decir" are:

  • Yo digo

  • Tú dices

  • Él/Ella/Usted dice

  • Nosotros/Nosotras decimos

  • Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes dicen
