CLASSIFICATION OF NOISE by Verderber (1991)

  • Physical Barriers are now classified as External Noise.

  • Psychological and Cultural Barriers are now classified as Internal noise.

  • Linguistic Barriers are now classified as Semantic Noise.

Example of each barrier:

  • “In other countries, not removing your shoes when you go in their house is disrespectful.” - This is a Cultural Barrier.

Why Cultural Barrier? As the definition said, it is based on someone's beliefs, traditions, or values.

  • “You were talking to your mother when your neighbor played loud music” This is a Physical Barrier.

Why Physical Barrier? Hence the example, the girl is talking to her mother when their neighbor played loud music.

  • “I am not fine, I need to be alone right now.” This is Psychological Barrier.

Why Psychological Barrier? Because the person speaking is not in a good state of mind to communicate, let us not force someone to communicate with us when they feel full of emotions.

  • “Meow” and “Woof” is Linguistic barriers.

Why Linguistic Barriers? because cats and dogs cannot communicate because they have different sounds that they make or languages.
