Photosynthesis

  • It is in which sunlight energy is used to make glucose oxygen.

  • The chloroplast's main function is to produce food (glucose) during photosynthesis and store food energy.

  • Chloroplasts contain the pigment, chlorophyll.

  • Chlorophyll absorbs most of the colors in the color spectrum and reflects only green and yellow wavelengths of light.

  • Glucose is also known as sugar.

  • Formula: 6CO2 + 6H2O + sun ---→ C6H12O2 + 6O2 (Endothermic)

  • Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplast of the plant cell. Oxygen is created as a waste product and is released into the air for us to breathe. The product is glucose and oxygen. The glucose that is produced is used for energy and growth.

  • Oxygen comes through the stomata

Reactants of cellular respiration come from the product of photosynthesis

Cellular Respiration

  • Cellular Respiration is when cells transform oxygen and other nutrients into energy.

  • Mitochondria are known as the powerhouse of the cell

  • ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is a source of energy made by the mitochondria used in every organism

  • Formula: C6H12O2 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H12O2 + ATP (Exothermic)

How are physical activity and cellular respiration connected?

When you breathe in more oxygen faster your cellular respiration is faster and your body sweats to excrete the waste.

Essential Nutrients

  • Proteins: required for the structure and regulation of the bodies and tissues and organs. (meats)

  • Carbs: the body’s primary source of energy, and protects your organs. (pasta) [Simple and Complex]

  • Vitamins: helping to fight infection, wound healing, making our bones stronger.

  • Minerals: Keeping your bones, muscles, heart, and brain working properly, is also important for making enzymes and hormones.

  • Water: Regulates blood temperature, moistens tissues in the eyes, protects body organs and tissues

  • Fat: Stored Energy (avocado)

Calories

If you get too many calories, you gain weight

If you eat fewer calories, you will not have enough to sustain functions (weight loss)

Metabolism is the chemical process that occurs to maintain life

The speed at which we digest food for growth + development

BMR

Basal Metabolic Rate

The minimum energy required for the body to function at rest

Heter and Auto

Heterotroph: Gets food from other organisms (animals)

Autotroph: Can produce its own food using light and water (plants)

Fiber: helps get rid of waste
