Key Moments in the Outsiders

Friendship:

  • When Johnny and Ponyboy come to Dally, after Johnny has stabbed Bob Sheldon, for help. He gives them fifty dollars, a gun and clothes for Ponyboy. He tells them to get on a freight train to Windrixville and find the abandoned church on Jay Mountain. By doing this, he shows his intentions of making sure the two (particularly Johnny) are protected from the possibility of going to jail, which he has been through and does not want the boys to have to go through.

Conflict:

  • The Rumble between the Greasers and the Socs. This Rumble is sparked by Johnny Cade killing Bob Sheldon. After a hard battle with many boys sustaining injuries, the Greasers defeat the Socs. Dally and Ponyboy rush to the hospital to see Johnny as he is not doing to well. When the two arrive at Johnny’s bedside, Dally says “We won, we beat the Socs. We stomped them--chased them out of our territory.” to which Johnny says “Useless… fighting’s no good” This shows how Johnny thinks they never should’ve had the Rumble. Shortly after this, Johnny says his last words to Ponyboy “Stay gold Ponyboy. Stay gold.”
