MOUNTAINEERING

  • Known as alpinism in Europe

  • It is a profession of going up or climbing mountains.

PRIMARY CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE ENGAGING IN MOUNTAINEERING

  • Technical knowledge & skill- acquire basic mountaineering skills; climbing, things to bring.

  • Physical Preparation - mountaineering demands high level of physical skill that is set beyond limit.

  • Mental preparation - being calm * having a clear mind is essential.

  • Judgment & experience- making a sound or valuable judgment or decision in a challenged situation can determine mountaineer’s success.

  • Caring for wilderness

EQUIPMENTS:

ROPE, CORD, & WEBBING

  • Used in climbing

CARABINERS

  • Are metal loops with spring loaded gates used as connectors for recreational climbing.

QUICKDRAWS

  • Used to connect the ropes to the bolt anchor.

HARNESS

  • A system that connects the ropes to the climber it is worn around the pelvis.

FIGURE EIGHT

  • A device used for descending it has a reliable stopping power on many belay situations.

BELAY GLOVES

  • Specialized glove having heat-resistant padding on the palms and fingers.

HELMET

  • A piece of equipment primarily used to protect the head/skull from falling debris.

SKILLS IN MOUNTAINEERING

  • Tying in - it is the attachment of the rope to the climbing harness.

  • Belaying - the skills that mean holding/catching. A skill a mountaineer needs to learn to avoid accidents of falling.

  • Leading - the leader puts protection while he/she ascends * once he/she reached the top.

  • Abseiling - it is the technique of descending a stiff rock

  • Lowering - it is the method of descending after a climb.

ORIENTEERING

  • An art of country race or navigation using map & a compass between check points along unfamiliar tracks.

  • Originated in Scandinavia in the late 19th century.

  • Major Ernst Killander, a scout leader and was called as the father of orienteering.

MATERIALS NEEDED FOR ORIENTEERING

  • Map

    • blue, black, white, green

  • Compass

  • Racing suit for orienteering

  • SHOES

  • Control card

LAY OUT AREAS

  • Assembly area - receives instructions

  • Start - where the player is being logged in

  • Master the map - orienteer arrives on this point

  • Equipment - these make sure that all of the materials are available

  • Control markers- these are orange & white

  • Recorder’s sheet - it is where the recorder the name, team and class, starting time and finishing time of the event.

  • Event/ Control card - it is where all the details in the competition.

RECREATIONAL BIKING

  • Karl Von Drais – a German who invented first bicycle w/c was a dandy horse.

TYPES OF BIKES:

  1. Road bikes - characterized by light frames and narrow, high pressure tires.

  2. Mountain bikes - built with strong components that can absorb rough riding, designed for road use.

  3. Touring bikes - stable handling conditions that are required for handling heavy loads.

  4. Recumbent - designed back, neck or hand problem that would be aggravated by hiking position.

  5. Tandem - bikes built for two.

DIFFERENT CYCLING TOURNAMENTS:

  • Cross country – crossing the country

  • Downhill - competition using mountains

  • Track racing - fast phase cycle racing over a short distance.
