Faith and works

James taught Faith without Works is dead. Christians should not just be hearers of the word alone but doers of the word. You can’t be a good Christian without practising the teachings of Jesus. He compared a man who observes his face in the mirror and soon forgets what his image looks like. A doer of the word is someone who accepts and practices the teachings of Jesus, such a person will receive God’s blessings.

A doer of the word must bridle (muzzle) his tongue, anyone who does not control his tongue deceives himself and his religion is in vain.

True religion involves visiting orphans and widows in their affliction and keeping oneself unstained from the world.

James said faith without work is dead. If a man is in need of food or clothing and comes to you and you just tell the person ``Go in peace, be warmed and be filled’’ without meeting his needs, then that person’s faith is useless. Anyone who claims to have Faith and have no works to show for it, his or her faith is of no use.

Some Christians say ``You have faith and I have works, show me your faith apart from your works and I by my works will show you my faith’’. A Christian who has faith but no works to show for it is not different from the demons who believes in God and trembles before him but has no works to show for it.

Abraham’s faith was justified by works and this counted for him as righteousness and faith because he was prepared to sacrifice his son, that was why he was called the friend of God.

Rahab the harlot was justified by works when she received the spies sent by Joshua, saved their lives by sending them out by another road. All the while, she was deceiving her own people.

James said that just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
