Notebook assignment one - civilizations

  • The difference between the lifestyle of a nomad and someone who stays in the same place is that nomads are constantly moving in search of food.

  • A nomad’s main food source is wild animals, they generally migrate along with the migration of animals

  • People who live in the same place have adapted to agricultural customs

    • These people farm for food and have learned to domesticate animals, therefore they have everything they need in one place

  • For someone to change customs they would have to adapt and develop basic elements of civilization such as a government, institutions, etc. 

    • They would have to learn how to farm and domesticate animals to live in one place

  • What changes would be made:

    • Changes to the environment such as land adaption as they learn to develop cities

  • 5 common traits of civilization are:

    • Advanced cities, technology, institutions, specialized workers, systems of recordkeeping

  • A modern-day example of technology is how modern cell phones are extremely advanced and have so many uses

Neolithic revolution

  • Before people would gather plants and hunt animals, they lived in small bands of people and were constantly moving

  • After many people domesticated plants and animals, they also developed advanced civilizarions, and governments

  • Arts became more elaborate, and people had more specialized jobs; advanced technology

  • Important factors: Farming and the domestication of plants and animals

  • Earliest evidence of the revolution was found 10,000 bc

 Notebook assignment 2 - Egypt

  • Mesopotamia is a polytheistic religion 

they have nearly 3,000 gods.

They believed that gods were inferior to humans

  • The government is a theocracy, 

each city has its primary god

  • Some of their achievements include:

    • Building canals and irrigation systems, the invention of the wheel, and the plow

    • Faced the challenge of unpredictable flooding, organized workers for irrigation

  • Haburammi’s code is a code of laws that set standards for commercial interaction. 

    • It was carved on to a large black stone and it also sets fines + punishments to meet the requirements for justice

  • What makes the nile river different from the other rivers:

    • The Nile creates a natural boundary, it ws larger than other rivers, flows north, and it is worshipped as a god, allowed more fertile soil for crops, lots of trade.

  • The Pharaohs were different from other leaders because they had the process of mummification, they were also worshipped as gods

  • The purpose of the pyramids in Egypt were to hold tombs for the dead Pharaohs

    • They also held architectual and artistic achievements

Hammurabi’s code

  • He thought that ruthless laws would bring peace

  • Th code has a collection of 282 laws

  • He taught that these laws came from god

Mesopotamia

  • Mesopotamia means land between rivers

  • Known as the beginning civilization

  • At the center of each city there was a temple to each city’s god called a ziggurat

  • The Indus valley was unique because they had an advanced drainage system, and the city was very structured; the geography was also unique to the Indus Valley
