Water Properties Notes

Water Properties Notes

- Oxygen is extremely electronegative = hogs electrons

- hydrogen bond= key for water flowing past itself, take in heat and regulate temperature

- water is a polar molecule because of its polar covalent bonds and its shape

- NON POLAR molecules like fats and oils and they will not react well with water

- POLAR= adhesion

- COHESION= water being attracted to itself

- SURFACE TENSION is due to the cohesion of the water and breaking of the bonds due to kinetic energy

- Things that dissolve in water are HYDROPHILLIC

- Stuff that does not dissolve in water are NONPOLAR AND HYDROPHOBIC

- Higher the kinetic energy= broken hydrogen bonds= water into gas

- Little kinetic energy, drop in temp= strong hydrogen bonding= water into ice

- Ice is less dense than water due to the water molecules being pushed farther apart than water's liquid state

    -water expands when it freezes

- Water has a high boiling point due to its hydrogen bonding
