What is Migration?

  • Migration is a type of mobility

  • Migration is a permanent move to a new location

  • Migration is a specific type of relocation, which is the bodily movement of people from one place to another.

  • Movement of people from one place to another

    Emigration - Migration from a location

    Immigration - Migration to a location

  • On average, Americans move once every 6 years.

  • The US population is the most mobile in the world with over 5 million moving from one state to another yearly.

  • 35 million people move within a state, county, or community every year

    Reasons for migration

  • People decide to migrate because of push & pull factors.

    Push factor- induces people to move out of their present location.

    Pull factor- influences people to move to a new location.

  • Push factors come in three types - economic, cultural, & environmental

  • Most people migrate for economic reasons - they want to make more money from their jobs.

  • Intervening obstacles - environmental or cultural feature that hinders migration.

  • In the past, these were primarily environmental. Now, these are much more about politics and culture.

    Types of migration

  • Internal Migration - Two types:

  • interregional migration - movement from one region to another within a country

  • intraregional migration - movement within a region

  • International migration - migration between countries

  • Net out-migration - Most migrants in the world come from these countries: Asia, Africa, and Latin America

  • Net in-migration - Most migrants in the world go to these countries: North America, Europe, and Oceania
