Arithmetic Sequence
A number sequence formed by adding a fixed number to each previous term to find the next term. The fixed number is called the common difference.
Causation
When a change in one quantity causes a change in a second quantity, A correllation between two quantities does not always imply it.
Common Difference
The difference between consecutive terms of an arithmetic sequence.
Continuous
A graph that is unbroken
Correlation coefficient
A number from -1 to 1 that tells you how closely the equation of the line of best fit models the data. Represented by the variable r.
Discrete
A graph composed of isolated points
Domain
The possible values for the input of a relation or function
Explicit Formula
Expresses the nth term of a sequence in terms of n.
Extrapolation
The process of predicting a value outside the range of known values.
Function
A relation in which each element of the domain corresponds with exactly one element in the range.
Function Notation
A method for writing variables as a function of other variables.
Interpolation
The process of estimating a value between two known quantities
Line of best fit
The most accurate trend line on a scatter plot showing the relationship between two sets of data
Linear Function
A function whose graph is a line. You can represent it with a linear equation.
Linear regression
A method used to calculate the line of best fit.
Negative association
When y-values tend to decrease as the x-values increase, the two data sets have this.
Negative correlation
When data with a negative association are modeled with a line, there is this.
No association
When there is no general relationship between x-values and y-values.
One-to-one
No two elements of the domain map to the same element in the range.
Positive association
When y-values tend to increase as the x-values increase.
Positive correlation
When data with a positive association are modeled with a trend line.
Range
The possible values of the output, or dependent variable, of a relation or function.
Recursive formula
Defines the terms in a sequence by relating each term to the ones before it. It is composed of an initial value and a rule for generating the sequence.
Relation
Any set of ordered pairs
Residual
the difference between the y-value of a data point and the corresponding y-value of the model for the data set.
Sequence
An ordered list of numbers that often forms a pattern
Term of a sequence
Any number in a sequence
Transformation
Function maps each point of its graph to a new location
Translation
Transformation that shifts the graph of a function the same distance horizontally, vertically, or both.
Trend line
A line that models the data in a scatter plot by showing the general direction of the data.
