Persuing policies to preserve independence. Ally against powerful states and counter with joining a weaker state if you are powerful. Not for preserving peace but for preserving sovereign and independence.

Business leaders control the government in Netherlands, weak confederation of strong provinces each wanting to maintain independence.

Dutch had stadholder(cermonial function to maintain Dutch defense(William of orange/III)

Benefit the middle class and had middle class values, hard work n simplicity.

He establishes puritian republic with regime of major generals and self as lord protector. Lead navigation act against Dutch for trade. Imposes Presbyterianism on Ireland and crushes Scottish. Dismisses parliment, raises taxes, Cromwell gives lead to his son who people don’t respect.
