17.6 Finding the -- Part 2
The conjugate base of HCl is the Cl- anion.
The Cl- anion is not acidic or basic.
The weak acid is the conjugate base of the F- anion.
F-'s affinity for H+ ion allows it to remove H+ ion from water, thus acting as a weak base.
The stronger the conjugate base, the weaker the acid.
When Cl- is put into water, it doesn't remove H+ ion from water.
NO 2 is the conjugate base of a weak acid and is therefore a weak base.
C 2H3O2 is a weak base because it is the conjugate base of a weak acid.
We can determine the pH of a solution containing an anion that acts as a weak base in a way similar to how we determine the pH of any weak base solution.
The ratio should be less than 5%.
The approximation is valid.
Substitute H3O+ into the equation.
NaOH or Ca(OH)2 have a counterion and hydroxide ion.
The counterions don't contribute to the acidity or basicity of the solution because they don't ionize water.
The counterions of the strong bases NaOH, KOH, and Ca(OH)2 are therefore pH neutral.
Adding a protons to the formula can form a cation.
The base's conjugate acid is the cation.
The conjugate acid of a weak base is the same as any other weak acidic solution.
Section 17.10 can be read.
The cations of many other metals ionize water in this way, unlike the alkali metal cations.
The smaller the cation, the more acidic it is.
The conjugate acid of a weak base is called the C5H5NH+ cation.
The counterion of a strong base is called the Ca2+ cation.
The weak acid is due to the small, highly charged metal cation.
Salts can form acidic, basic, or neutral solutions when dissolved in water.
The solution's pH is dependent on the specific cation and anion involved.
We look at the four possibilities individually.
Cations are neutral.
Strong acids have conjugate bases of anions.
Cations are neutral.
Weak acids have anions.
The table summarizes all of the possibilities.
Determine if the solution is acidic, basic, or neutral.
The conjugate base of a strong acid is the Cl- anion.
The solution is not acidic or basic.
The metal is a weak acid.
The conjugate base of a strong acid is known as the br- anion.
The solution is acidic.
