Kilauea Volcano report

Kilauea Volcano Report

Here's a little background information or fun facts about the Kilauea volcano. This is an active shield volcano and it is the most active out of the five volcanoes that make up the island of Hawaii. It is anywhere between 210 thousand to 280 thousand years old . And the most recent eruption was actually just a few months ago in December 2020. It has got its name Kilauea because this word in Hawaiian means much spreading or spewing and it refers to the constant flow of lava that’s coming from the volcano.

Where is this volcano situated? The Longitude and latitude of this volcano are 19.4069° N, 155.2834° W. The relative location of the Kilauea is that it's located in the southeastern part of Hawaii USA. This Volcano as well as 4 others make up the island of Hawaii which is also known as the big island. As you can see in the picture on the left you could see how much space each volcano takes in the Big Island. And

Kilauea Volcano is part of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The first picture is actually a Google Maps picture of the island of Hawaii and the red marker is marking the Mount Kilauea volcano and you could see right beside that it shows that it’s in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The second is Hawaii in relation to the USA or North America because it's a bigger picture and you can see that the bigger chunk is actually where Kilauea is located in the island of Hawaii but there are a couple of small Islands still considered to be part of Hawaii.

Why is the Kilauea volcano the place where it is? The volcano was formed because of the Pacific tectonic plate moving over the Hawaiian hotspot. You might be wondering why there are a lot of volcanoes in Hawaii because it's not a collision Zone and it's not on the border of any of the tectonic plates but in order to understand this you need to know what a hotspot is. A hotspot is a weak spot in a tectonic plate that easily allows magma to rise to the surface. And there is a hotspot in the pacific tectonic plate called Hawaiian hotspot. The Kilauea mainly consists of solidified flows of lava, tephra, and Ash. What does the Kilauea look like? This is a shield volcano so it is pretty much symmetrical and it has some slope. It has a caldera and it is about 1277 M tall.'

How has the Kilauea volcano changed over time? First, this volcano was actually a submarine volcano which is basically underwater fissures or vents where Magma can erupt from. Next, the Kilauea started emerging from the sea about 50,000 to 100,000 years ago. This volcano has been pushing itself up with the help of its Alkali Basalt lava and finally emerged from the Water by using explosive eruptions. But keep in mind that the Kilauea hasn’t fully emerged and a part of it still rests under the sea. And finally, the current situation, the volcanic activity, and pattern have been pretty much the same over the past 200- 300 years. The Kilauea volcano is known as an active volcano because it's been erupting continuously since 1983 till the current date. and that's how the Kilauea has changed over time.

Why Care and significance? The first reason is because of belief. The Kilauea Volcano is very significant to the Hawaiians because they believe that this volcano is actually the home to the Hawaiian goddess of fire and volcanoes, goddess Pele. This goddess is well respected in their mythology. And the Kilauea plays a huge role in the Hawaiian culture. Next is the environmental impact Kilauea has. This volcano just like any natural disaster has a negative impact on the environment. It releases toxic gases that pose a threat to the ecosystem and even the human well-being. The Kilauea exposes a lot of volcanic air pollution and when mixed with other natural chemicals such as water and oxygen can cause things such as acid rain and volcanic smog. Even the lava can be harmful because when it is mixed with ocean water, it can let out large clouds of mist that emit toxic contaminants.

Why care part 2 so this is the economical aspect. Kilauea volcano has a negative and positive impact on the economy. Negative because of the damages a general volcano causes. For example, when Kilauea erupted in 2018, this was one of the most harmful eruptions this volcano has created. An estimate of 700 homes was damaged. And research shows that the volcano has caused 95 million dollars of loss to the economy but at the same time Kilauea attracts a large number of tourists which helps the economy. Many tourists and geologists visit this place because it’s not common to see lava falling from a volcano so often. And it’s a very significant landform.
