26.1 The Colors of Rubies and Emeralds
Rubies are deep red and emeralds are brilliant green, but they are caused by the same ion.
The crystal that hosts the ion is different.
About 1% of the Al3+ ion are replaced by the Cr3+ ion in rubies.
Emeralds are crystals of aluminum silicate in which a similar percentage of Al3+ is replaced by Cr3+.
There is a green and red embedded ion in the aluminum oxide crystal.
