Motion: THBT the LGBTQ should actively boycott the Harry Potter series

Rebuild 1: Nearly impossible to do so

  • Even if the LGBTQ tries to boycott the serise, it will be really hard to do so

  • Since it has received international recognition and many people, including people in the LGBTQ enjoy reading it

  • Meaning that even if the LGBTQ decides to go through with it, it wouldn't reach the end goal as the main purpose of boycotting anything is to minimize the impact of said object and their creator, but in this case, Harry Potter has already gained an international fanbase

  • So doing so wouldn’t contribute to anything as it has been around for so long and is so popular

  • So ultimately, this would be a less than effective way of protesting and we on opp believe that there are better ways

Solution: Education

  • Educating not only the author but also fandom and where everything went wrong is the first steps to a more peaceful and loving world

  • Not to mention that boycotting can lead to obstruction and disturbance to the public, and causing fights

  • Therefore educating is more effective in the sense that it is first of all more peaceful, but also more impactful since to educate, you need to explain to everyone why this is happening and how you can help, but with boycotts most of the time, they just do the action

Point 1: More than just JKR

  • What we need to understand here is that the author isn't the only one responsible for their work. Meaning that if you do decide to boycott Harry Potter, it will actually extend outside of JKR and into the publishers, employees working at their amusement parks and many other people involved and works under her

  • Meaning that by boycotting such an international series will affect more than just JKR

  • So again, we still aren’t reaching our goal within the status quo

Refutation:

  • The new book isn't Harry Potter and OG never really linked it back to the motion

  • Undertones of transphobia should have need discovered long ago

  • Then young kids should get educated
