end rhyme
Rhyme that occurs at the end of two or more lines of poetry. (most common)
internal rhyme
a rhyme involving a word in the middle of a line and another at the end of the line or in the middle of the next.
rhyme scheme
pattern of rhymes within a unit of verse; in analysis, each end rhyme-sound is represented by a letter.
Masculine rhyme (single rhyme)
rhyme in which only the last, accented syllable of the rhyming words correspond exactly in sound; most common kind of end rhyme
feminine rhyme (double rhyme)
Rhyme in which two consecutive syllable of the rhyme-words correspond, the first syllable carrying the accent
Half rhyme (slant rhyme)
imperfect, approximate rhyme (sun/sea/scud/beaks)
assonance
repetition of two or more vowel sounds within a line.
consonance
Repetition of two or more consonant sounds within a line.
alliteration
Repetition of two or more initial consonant sounds
Onomatopoeia
the use of words that imitate sounds
euphony
the use of compatible, harmonious sounds to produce pleasing, melodious effect
cacophony
The use of inharmonious sounds in close conjunction for effect.
enjambment (run-on line)
a run-on-line, one continuing into the next without grammatical breaks.
end-stopped line
a line that ends in a grammatical break prior to the next line.
meter
Poem's rhythm, or it's pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables.

A pause of break with a line of poetry (middle)
Anacrusis
an extra unaccented syllable at the beginning of a line before the regular meter begins
catalexis
an extra unaccented syllable at the ending of a line after the regular meter ends, or the absence of a syllable in the last foot of a line or verse.
lyric poetry
Personal, reflective poetry that reveals the speaker's thoughts and feelings about the subject
sonnet
a poem of 14 lines of iambic pentameter
Ode
A lyric poem usually marked by serious, respectful, and exalted feelings toward the subject.
elegy
a poem of serious reflection, typically a lament for the dead.
epigram
short satirical/witty statement in a verse
ballad
A narrative poem written in four-line stanzas, characterized by swift action and narrated in a direct style.
