Metal
an element that is generally shiny, it is easily pulled into wires or hammered into thin sheets. A metal is a good conductor of electricity and thermal energy.
Luster
Describes the ability of a metal to reflect light
Ductility
the ability to be pulled into thin wires
Malleability
the ability of a substance to be hammered or rolled into sheets.
Alkali metals
Elements in group 1, react quickly with other elements such as oxygen. Occur only in compounds. Have silvery appearance. Soft. Lowest densities of all metals.
Alkaline earth metals
the elements in group 2 on the periodic table. React quickly. Don't occur naturally, soft, silvery, and has a higher density than alkali metals, but still have a low density.
Transition elements
elements in groups 3-12. High melting points, greater strength, and higher densities. Some exist freely in nature.
Nonmetals
are elements that have no metallic properties.
halogen
an element in group 17 of the periodic table. can react with metal and salt. react with other compounds to form compounds. Don't exist as free elements.
Noble Gases
elements in group 18. dont react with other elements
metalloid
an element that has physical and chemical properties of both metals and nonmetals. Also referred to as semi-conducters
Semiconductor
conducts electricity at high temperatures, but not at low temperatures.
