Apocrine Gland

Type of gland whose secretions contain parts of secretory cells.

Dermis

The thick layer of the skin beneath the epidermis

Epidermis

Outer, epithelial layer of skin.

Hair Follicle

Tube-like depression in the skin where a hair develops.

Inflammation

Tissue response to stress that includes pain, warmth, redness, and swelling.

Keratinization

Process by which cells form fibrils of keratin and harden.

Melanin

Dark pigment generally found in the skin and hair.

Melanocytes

Melanin-producing cell

Merocrine Glands

A structure whose cells remain intact while secreting; a type of sweat gland.

Nails

Protective plate at the distal end of a finger or toe. 

Sebaceous Glands

Skin gland that secretes sebum.

Subcutaneous Layer

Loose connective tissue layer beneath the skin; also called hypodermis.

Sweat Glands

Exocrine gland in skin that secretes a mixture of water, salt, and wastes such as urea.
