Bauman
Solid modernity & Liquid Modernity
Solid Modernity
A state where things remain indefinite and unchanging which gives a sense of certainty e.g. family, work + religion
Liquid Modernity
Social instituions have become more fluid, uncertain + insecure e.g. family diversity
Lyotard + Baudrillard
Contemporary society is rapidly changing + full of uncertainties
People are no longer limited to social structures e.g. family
Disintegration of the nuclear family
Increase in consumer choice and individualisation
Family Diversity
Changes in family types/multiple family types e.g. same sex, reconstituted
Beck-Gernsheim + Stacey
Traditional family is being replaced with a diversity of relationships on how people choose to live
People no longer feel pressured to stay committed or have kids
Rise in divorce rates, cohabitation and illegitimacy
Individualisation thesis
Chambers = Individualisation is the main reason for significant changes about love, commitment + family decline
Beck-Gernsheim = Individualisation is where traditional social relationships have been losing their meaning and influence
Bauman = As people explore new ways to look for security in a relationship, an increase in growth and personal living arrangements increases
Criticisms of postmodernism
Over estimates the choices available to people + ignores the power of social class
Giddens - Too much choice can lead to instability
Feminists argue that although women have more freedom, they are still harshy judged for not conforming to family expectations
Functionalists argue that the nuclear family is still the preferred family type as it promotes solidarity
