Kinetics and Equilibrium Test

Branch of chemistry that is concerned with the rates of chemical reactions

1. 2 reactants are allowed to collide - the minimum energy colliding particles must have to react is called the activation energy

2. During a reaction, particles that are neither reactants nor products momentarily form an activation complex

   • Activation complex - the arrangement of atoms at the peak of the activation energy barriers

3. Formation of products

   • Exothermic - energy is released

   • Endothermic - energy is absorbed

If a system at equilibrium is subjected to stress, the equilibrium is shifted to the direction that tends to relieve the stress

• Affects systems in which only gases are involved

• For pressure to affect a gaseous system, the total number of moles on the left side must be different from the total number of moles on the right

The addition of an ion common to 2 solutes brings about precipitation or reduced ionization
